Karakoram Ascents Database

Development phase
Idea

In the Karakoram, information on peaks, routes, and past ascents is often difficult to access, inconsistent, or not preserved for the long term.

The Karakoram Ascents Database aims to create a data and knowledge platform that organizes existing knowledge, incorporates local perspectives, and makes it accessible over the long term.

The focus is on local roots, transparent data sources, and a governance structure that ensures long-term local responsibility and data sovereignty.

01

Background

Information about peaks, routes, and past ascents in the Karakoram is often scattered, inconsistent, or difficult to access. This makes orientation, planning, and long-term documentation more difficult.

02

Local Roots

The database is to be developed in collaboration with a suitable institution in Gilgit-Baltistan. Local perspectives, expertise, and accountability form the foundation of the project.

03

Develop a pilot

First, the project scope, data sources, quality standards, and responsibilities are defined.

The goal is a small, realistic pilot project with clear rules.

04

Make it usable

In the long term, the platform aims to make knowledge more accessible to local stakeholders, the mountaineering community, the tourism industry, the education sector, the research community, and government agencies.

Impact

Nature

Structured knowledge about routes, peaks, and land use can help us be more mindful of sensitive areas and make more informed long-term decisions.

Use

Better-documented information provides a foundation for more responsible planning, guidance, and development in mountain tourism.

People

Reliable access to knowledge can support local mountain professionals, guides, educators, and decision-makers in their work.

The Karakoram Ascents Database is not merely a technical platform. It is intended to become a collectively supported knowledge infrastructure that strengthens local ownership and connects diverse perspectives on mountain regions.

Project Status

The Karakoram Ascents Database is currently in the partnership and conceptual phase.

We are deliberately developing the project step by step—in collaboration with local stakeholders and based on clear roles, data sources, and long-term accountability.
